Deep-C ycle G el C ell batteries are lead-acid
batteries, but differ in construction and
chemistry than Wet Cells. They offer unique
features such as: No maintenance, low self-
discharge rate, and low internal resistance.

Gel Cells use a thickening agent like fumed
silica to immobilize the electrolyte. If the battery
container cracks, the cell will still continue to
function.

The thickening agent prevents stratification by
preventing the movement of electrolyte. They
will not leak and continue to operate even
under water.

Gel cells cannot be re-filled with electrolyte,
and controlling the rate of charge is very
important. Battery compartments need to be
ventilated.

Gel cells use slightly lower charging voltages
than flooded cells so the set-points for
charging equipment have to be adjusted.

Virtually no gassing under normal operating
conditions: Gel cells are hermetically sealed
and operate under pressure to recombine
oxygen and hydrogen during the charge
process into water.

Gel cell advantages include: No equalization
